Know more about DIN renewal in India and DIN KYC filing
The Director Identification Number (DIN) is a unique identifier provided by Ministry of Corporate affairs to the individuals who want to serve as a director of any kind of company in India. It is a compulsory requirement for all company directors in the country.
What is DIN Renewal?
Once issued, DIN is valid for lifetime of the director unless it is cancelled due to violations or other reasons. However, as per the Companies (Amendment) Act, 2019, the directors are required to update their KYC details annually through the DIR-3 KYC form with the MCA. If a director fails to do so., it could lead to penalties, legal actions, and the deactivation of DINs
Every director is required to submit their KYC (Know Your Customer) details to the MCA to keep their DIN valid. The DIN renewal in India is contingent upon completing this KYC filing.
What is DIN KYC Filing?
The DIN KYC filing is mandatory for all directors, so they must update their personal details with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs. The purpose of this filing is to ensure that the government has the latest and most accurate details about each director, which aids in preventing fraud and increasing corporate transparency. The KYC filing involves verifying the director’s identity and other personal information, such as contact details, address, and other documents.
What is Form DIR-3 KYC eForm?
The Form DIR-3 KYC is the key document for filling DIN KYC. In other words, it is an electronic form mandated by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) used for updating the KYC (Know Your Customer) details of individuals who have been allotted a Director Identification Number (DIN).
It is mandatory for directors to submit this form every year to ensure their DIN remains active and valid. The form is filed electronically through the MCA portal, and it requires the director to enter various personal details, including:
- Personal Information: Name, father’s name, date of birth, nationality, etc.
- Address Details: Permanent address, communication address, etc.
- Identity Proof: Aadhar number (or passport number for foreign nationals).
- Photograph: A recent passport-size photograph.
- Signature: The director’s digital signature for authentication.
- Mobile No. & E-mail Id: Mobile number and e-mail Id required for OTP verification
- Other Details: Details of Citizenship, Nationality, and Residential Status to be provided
Directors must file this form in a timely manner to avoid any penalties or issues related to their DIN status.
Types of DIR-3 KYC Forms
- DIR-3 KYC (e Filing): This form is used by directors accessible on the MCA Portal to update their details for the first time or when they are renewing their DIN after a lapse. This form should be filed annually. It is also required for existing filers of they intend to update their mobile number, email address or any other details.
- DIR-3 KYC Web (Filing for Foreign Nationals): A simplified version of the form for foreign nationals who hold a DIN. These directors can update their details through the MCA web portal without the need for a digital signature.

When filing DIR-3 KYC, directors must submit the following documents to ensure their KYC details are complete and accurate:
- Proof of Identity: This can be the Aadhar card (for Indian directors) or passport (for foreign nationals).
- Proof of Address: Self-attested copy of address proof. It may include documents like an Aadhar card, a voter’s ID card, utility bills (electricity, water, gas), or rent agreements.
